A Dozen Years of Wedded Bliss- The Long Version

August 1999- Look how LITTLE we were!!!
While I can't believe it has been twelve years since we were married in the Salt Lake Temple, it does feel like it was awhile ago. I remember thinking, "I wonder how this will be." I was not terribly optimistic about marriage for a number of reasons. In the first few months, I remember thinking, "This is a lot better than I though it would be!"  We had our little basement apartment in Idaho Falls. I was teaching Anatomy at a massage therapy school and Corey worked in the electronics department at ZCMI while we decided where to pursue his degree. We watched reruns of Beverly Hills 90210 and never missed ER. Lame, I know! We took naps on Sundays after church. That is the last time I remember Corey ever taking naps. Our first disagreements were over him watching football on Sundays and having a "bedtime." You don't just fall asleep in front of the TV at night while your bride is alone in the bedroom!!

In late December, we still didn't know where we wanted to move for school--we narrowed it down to UVSC in Provo, U of U in SLC, or Dixie in St. George. We took a road trip over Christmas and looked at the schools and housing in each. We were really digging St. George, but a 2 year school wasn't very helpful to our plans. We decided last-minute on UVSC, put all our things in 2 small cars, and headed out. We lived in Orem for a year, then moved into Grandma Malan's apartments near BYU for another year before heading out to Columbus, Ohio, for dental school.

Those four years were pretty grueling in many ways-especially on our marriage. Late nights studying and working, along with intense stress from school and being far from family were intensely difficult for us both. Some plans had to be changed. One saving grace was our OSU student ward. We gained many friendships there that have endured over a decade now. And of course, there was Buckeye football to cheer for! Corey and I were also able to take several great road trips to Palmyra, Kirtland, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Niagara Falls, New York City, Washington DC, and Chicago while living there. However, we flew home every chance we got during the school breaks. Looking back, I mark a lot of our marital milestones by our travels. Of all the money we've spent during our years together, I've rarely regretted anything spent on travel. (We travel pretty frugally--nothing too fancy, though we once splurged on a convertible Jeep. Totally worth it!!!)

When I graduated in 2005, we found a place in Provo to live and I got a full time job at Mountainlands Community Health Center while Corey finished his Biology degree at UVSC. We were blessed to be able to take a vacation every year. In 2006, we went to Maui for the first time to visit my sister and attended a dental conference. We ADORED it and started looking for jobs and a home. Unfortunately, there are no real educational opportunities on the island, so that plan was dashed. It's still a pipe dream of ours though. :) Another fun vacation was a quick trip to NYC with my mom for DECA followed by a Caribbean cruise where we visited a lot of the smaller islands like Tortola and Dominica. It was beautiful, but we learned that NYC is NOT the port you want to leave from. It made for a very long time on the water with a lot of obnoxious people. No offense, New Yorkers/Jersiers, but we grew tired of the loud and whiny personas of a lot of our fellow cruisers.

We tried to make Maui a yearly habit as much as possible. We would often go for a dental conference  and stay to play with Natalie and Ryan. We also visited Kauai and adored it equally. Some of our greatest adventures occurred on the islands, such as our 23 mile hike to Kalalau on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai. The area beckoned again a few years later and we traversed the Na Pali by sea on a 17 mile kayak trip. Both were exhausting, exhilarating, and completely awe-inspiring. On our hike, I fell and hit my head hard at mile 6. I was seriously turning back. I'd had it. I was sore, scared, and satisfied with what I'd already seen. Corey cleaned my wound, carried my pack for a short time, and convinced me to go on. I don't know how he did it, because I was set on going back RIGHT THEN! I am so grateful he did, because the reaching our destination together was everything. I have looked back on that experience many times as Corey has carried me though other struggles, and has urged me to push forward when I haven't had the strength or desire to move ahead. I love him for that. He is stalwart and strong. A true gentle giant. Again on our kayak trip, I was so grateful to have his strong arms propelling us forward as we traversed the rough waves of the early season. There is a rhythm in paddling that allows you to be lifted up and pushed forward by the waves when you hit them right. When we were both in sync with this rhythm, the voyage was much easier and even more invigorating. Again, I parallel this to our marriage: when we are both in tune with each other and faithfully following God's plan for our family, married life is blissful.

After a year of searching, and home prices rising 20% in Utah Valley, we finally found a home to purchase that fit most of our specifications: my main desire was for it to have an unobstructed westward facing view of Utah Valley and Utah Lake. It was a bonus that it was on a large, private lot bordering an orchard that was home to deer, pheasants, and other beautiful wildlife. I gardened my way through depressing days with each new blossom healing my heart. Again, Corey was by my side through some hard days. We loved living by family and having loved ones come stay with us as often as possible. We adored having our nieces and nephews in our home especially. It was to this home we brought our firstborn son, Zachary. His arrival was an absolute delight, and changed our marriage and each of us for the better.

Corey knew he wanted to go to grad school in the medical sciences, but it took a few years of working retail at Cabela's and lots of pondering to finally decide on chiropractics. I was surprised and elated at the announcement, and we quickly proceeded through the application process. We decided on Parker College in Dallas, Texas, for a variety of reason, namely NOT the summer saunas or stunning scenery! But the past 20 months has sailed by, and Corey is officially halfway through his program! And he is seriously showing me up in the academic department! He's been on the Dean's List almost every semester, and was recently awarded a scholarship for his achievements. He never ceases to amaze me! We added a daughter, Zoey Ella, to our family this February, and every day, I seriously marvel at how lucky and blessed we are. I love our little family. I feel like I live a fairy tale life. I adore being a wife and a mother. I only work 1-2 days a week and can provide for our needs. We have a humble home, running cars, running water, and Cheerios in the cupboard--what else can a girl ask for?

The first dozen years have given us tests and trials, along with amazing triumphs. I do not know what the next several dozen will bring, but I pray we will both stay true to our covenants and rely on each other and the Lord, and I know we can make it through anything.
Love, love, love you, Husband.

As some of the following photos will attest, we've been through--well, maybe not all of it--but a lot:
thick and thin- literally,
bad haircuts and bad highlights,
bangs, beards, braces (and a little balding :)),
mortar boards and National Boards,
student loans, home loans, glasses, tonsils, kidney stones
(and all accompanying moans and groans),
sleepless nights, blissful days, stressing out to get a raise,
broken cars, healing scars, summer evenings counting stars,
Baby One, Baby Two, falling more in love with you,
highs and lows, fasts and slows, wondering where the money goes,
I love you, you love me, working toward Eternity.

Sleep Struggles

So this turned into a rant. :) Really I just wanted to post that cute video of Zach all dozy and insisting he isn't tired. So cute and funny, huh? Just ignore the rest, but I'm leaving it for documentation sake. :) So in a few years when he's sleeping like an angel (right?!) I can look back and laugh......

Also, two days after writing this, he's gone to bed like an angel two nights in a row now. After two nights of miserable cry-it-out method. :(  So it has a happy ending. For now!

So far in my mothering career, the biggest struggles have centered around sleep. I know it may seem petty to some--but only to those that have not struggled with sleep. I am a long-time insomniac, and have tried every remedy out there to help me catch a good night's rest. When I was pregnant with Zach, I could no longer take  any medication to help with sleep--not that it helped much anyway. Sleep was moderately difficult during pregnancy due to the regular discomforts, but I plowed through. So I must've passed on my crummy sleep genes to my sweet baby boy. From Day One, Zach has been a terrible sleeper. We tried many different sleep training methods, and nothing worked until crying-it-out when he was 10 months old. Until that time, I was getting up with him every few hours each night for a half hour or so at a time. After this initial successful phase of sleep training, he would sleep about 6 hours at a time, which was heavenly for me.

Since then, every few months--especially during and after any travel--he regresses back to awful sleep patterns, and we have to retrain him. We have a pretty set routine, and take turns brushing his teeth, saying prayers, reading stories, singing songs, and rocking for a few minutes before lying him down. But lately, he's gotten out of the routine again, and I am going CRAZY!!! I don't mind getting up in the night from time to time, or the occasional early morning wake up call. But his sleep patterns are all over the place. Some nights he won't fall asleep until 10 or later, and he's often awake around 6:30 am. His nap schedule is a huge problem, because he has been refusing to nap, or taking an hour-plus to settle down for one. So depending on when or if he naps, his bedtime routine is completely off.

For instance, in the video above, he has been up for 11 hours straight, had a "quiet time," but did not nap. He crashed at 6 pm, which he NEVER does. I was planning on putting him to bed at 7, but figured since he fell asleep around 6, he'd be down for the night. I laid him in his crib, and lo and behold, he is up screaming and cranky 20 minutes later. It is now 9:30 pm and he's been crying for 1.5 hours since we did the bedtime routine. He begs for water, the potty, more stories and songs ("I want ALL OF THEM," he answers, when asked which one he wants us to sing :)), and of course, the obligatory, "I wanna rock for ONE MINUTE!"

I adore this boy more than words can describe, and know this too shall pass. But HOLY MOLY--I am going nuts!!! I feel like I've read all the books, tried all the tricks, and on and on. I'm really not asking for advice (but feel free to give any!), because I'm sure it will come with time--just prayers for patience so we all get through this unscathed! So we're back to trying the sleep training, and then we leave for a visit to Idaho/Utah in 3 weeks. Awesome. Then back to it. Again. Also, we have an impending room switch coming up as soon as we get the time to organize the bedrooms for each child. Zoey is still in the basinett next to my bed, though she is rapidly outgrowing it, and she is sleeping less and less soundly. Don't even got me started!

Right now my sweet boy is in there crying. I feel like a cold-hearted mother, but NOTHING WE DO (or have seen, read about, or tried) WORKS!!!! Before, it has taken a couple days of crying-it-out, which I really hate. But really, does anything else work? We're doing the Supernanny thing too. I know a lot of parents just pile the kids into bed with them or snuggle down with them. NO WAY!! That may be one of the reasons I am such an insomniac, and I know I couldn't function or sleep at all in that manner.

Okay, done ranting, kid is still crying, though it's getting quieter, and I don't feel any better.....:)

**As I wrote at the beginning, I had to note that this story has a happy ending. Two days after letting him "cry-it-out" for 1-2 hours, he has gone to sleep like clockwork for both naps and bed for the past two days. I don't know that it's worth trying any other method. I abhor "cry-it-out," but it is honestly the only thing I have found that works. :(( Now we'll see how Zoey does when we move her to the crib. I don't know if I can handle another round of cry-it-out--especially not with my tender newborn girl.....

Family Pictures

We only have two or three photos of my entire family from my childhood. Unfortunately, Corey has the same feelings about being photographed as my dad did, which makes it very difficult to get a family picture. Too bad to both of them!! Crazy Camera Lady is here, snapping away, o as not to miss out on any more important family milestones!! Seriously--I love documenting our lives with photos. I am not the greatest photographer, but I have a pretty good collection of digital files of us all!

So I had to post a photo of my family for my work website, and we did not have a decent current one. Of course Zach had a black eye the week it was due, so we couldn't get a new one. So I set up my cheap Sony Cybershot in the backyard and aimed it and put on the self timer. The following were decent, although Zoey was not in a smiling mood. :( So which one is best? The flash went off in the first one, and it has the best lighting. All the others have mediocre lighting, and it was hard to get us all looking and smiling and not appearing like I'm on drugs. So any votes for which one to put up for work?

And here are some random pics of the family, including Mom's visit. It was so great to have she and Natalie out here, I cannot even explain! They are both angels and helped me out so much. I miss them like crazy already!

That's How She Rolls!

Look at the determination in her face!!
Zoey seems to be on close to the same schedule as Zachary for rolling over at about 4 months old, only this girl is so sugary-sweet and thoughtful that she waited until both Corey and I were present for her first complete rolls!! I was disappointed that I was at work and Corey was home the first time Zach rolled over, so it was a big treat to be present for Zoey's big milestone! It was funny, because she did it exactly two weeks before while she was lying on the couch between Corey and I. We sort of counted it, but the couch may have had an incline to help her. The "real" time she was enjoying some Tummy Time on the floor, and Corey and I both looked right as she rolled over. She didn't seem half as shocked as we both were!
And those round, juicy cheeks--could you just chomp into them, or what??!!!

Here she is trying at it a few weeks ago
Zoey doesn't get a lot of floor time since I'm afraid Big Brother might accidentally stomp on her, so I was impressed that it happened so soon. I am in absolutely no hurry for her to be mobile, since I will now have two little rascals to chase after. With Zach, everything has seemed like a race (against no one) to see how early he could be doing everything. He was rolling over at 4 months, crawling around 6 months, walking around 10 months, and on and on. Now I realize he just sped through those milestones too darn fast!! I just want Zoey to be my baby for as long as possible, so hopefully I won't be posting a blog about her crawling for awhile!!
And here she is a few days ago from start to finish!

Speaking of "rolls," look at these sweet little thighs!
She really isn't chubby at all, but when she flexes her legs, these rolls show up!

TA DA!!! We need a big smile here!

Yeah, I could just eat her up!

Zach is Two and a Half Years Old!!

Can you look at this smile and not just fall in love with this kid?!!

At 2.5 years old, he is the epitome of what a little boy of that age should be. He is enthusiastic, energetic, feisty, extremely loud, sweet as can be, mischievous, and just an all-around champ! He hit a rough spot right after his second birthday when we thought he'd officially hit the "Terrible Twos," (evidenced by tantrums, throwing large objects down stairs, etc.) but after we returned home from our holiday travels, the crazy behavior cleared right up and our Super Sweet Zach was back.

Then, a few weeks ago, he discovered his screaming voice, and uses it profusely to demand water (or, as of late, "juicy mingo" (aka mango)-where does he get this stuff?!!) in his sippy cup, "chweets" (treats), "peanut butter jelly and sandwich" for lunch, help with his various playing escapades, and whatever else. I think this is the real Terrible Two stage that he's finally caught on to, unfortunately. Some days are just fine, but other days, my patience is tried to the very limit. But always, at the end of every day, Corey and I still marvel and all the cute, smart, and sweet things he said and did throughout the day, and we are ready for another adventurous day with this wonderful boy.

"Peanut butter jelly and sandwich"- all over his cute face!
One of the things he's really into lately is Peter Pan. He loves the movie, the book, and pretending every conceivable scenario with Peter Pan, Captain Hook, Tinkerbell, and the other characters. I bought this costume for him for this coming Halloween, and he was in HEAVEN when I pulled it out the other day as a special treat!

Here is a little stunt he pulled while I was feeding Zoey--unrolled ALL the tin foil in the kitchen in order to get the "trumpet" inside!! Da-doo-da-doo!
Zach is such a sweet big brother to Zoey, always giving her loves and snuggling up to her. I do wish he would realize how small and fragile she is though, as he likes to roughhouse around her also.

Too tender!!
He sings lots of Primary songs. Here is the semi-spastic version of, "I am a Child of God."

Here he is all excited about his Peter Pan outfit.

And my heart melts when he says, "I love you, Wendy."
(Which he says even when he's not playing Peter Pan!)

And of course, he's all about the sword fighting and swashbuckling with the Evil Captain Hook!
Corey is such a good sport!!

We feel so blessed to have this little boy in our lives. He is an absolute delight, even when he's being naughty!
